Mechanical Binding
Are you looking for reliable options to bind your important books, reports, and documents? Total Printing Systems offers customized spiral binding services or what most refer to as mechanical book binding. This is one of the basic, easy, and reliable binding methods, wherein you can keep a book or document completely open or flat when reading, unlike most other binding methods. We produce semi-concealed coil-bound books that allow for a printed spine to display on bookshelves. We can bind books up to 3/4″automatically and up to 3″ manually.
How is Spiral Binding Done?
Spiral binding proceeds in the following steps:
- The sheets are punched with round, oval, or slotted holes on the binding edge.
- These holes are drilled at specific angles, which largely depend on the size and thickness of the book as well as the type of plastic spiral selected.
- Next plastic coils are inserted through the holes, which keeps all the pages together.
- The spiral is machine threaded through the holes and the book is ready for use.
Design Considerations and Types
The following are some common design considerations to be made when you choose spiral binding of books:
- Spiral bound covers can be soft or hard cover and printed in full color.
- The covers of these books may be UV coated or laminated with either gloss or matte laminate for added protection.
- This also improves the aesthetics and the quality, as the book covers won’t easily tear even after frequent handling and turning of pages.
- While white or black are the most commonly used colors for the coil, you may choose a color based on your preferences and the cover printing. Black or white usually contrasts with the colorful cover page.
- To be sure your files include proper margins for your individual project, contact your representative for a template.
Your page counts can be in increments of two, considering both sides of a paper.
We perform the following types of mechanical binding at our in-house bindery:
- Plastic Spiral Binding: In this method, the holes punched are round. Also, the coil used is helical which slightly changes the alignment of pages when the book is opened.
- Wire-o Binding: In this method, a continuous hinge of double loops or twin loops is used for securing the pages. We recommend this for notebooks, reports, and calendars.
- Comb binding: Usually, these holes punched are rectangular slots, and the pages align exactly when the book is opened.
